A king or queen is the Head of State in a monarchy. The British monarchy is known as a constitutional monarchy, means that, while the Sovereign is the Head of State, an elected Parliament has the authority to make and pass legislation.

In addition to these State responsibilities, the Monarch serves as the 'Head of Nation' in a less formal capacity. Three days ago (6 September), at Balmoral Castle, Her Majesty The Queen appointed Liz Truss as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, asking Mrs.Truss to form a new Administration.
Ms. Truss is Her Majesty's 15th Prime Minister during her reign. Winston Churchill was the first, in 1952.
