Preliminary results announced immediately after the close of voting in the election showed that 1.1 million Austrians and 265,000 European Union citizens participated in 1,504 polling stations.

The right-wing Freedom Party (FPÖ) also achieved stronger-than-expected results, winning 20% of the vote, a 16 percentage point increase over the previous election.

The People's Party, which leads the government, received only 9% of the vote, a 11 percentage point drop from the previous election.
