The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) won first place in the municipal elections with 39% of the vote, a 4.6 percentage point drop from the previous election.

Preliminary results announced immediately after the close of voting in the election showed that 1.1 million Austrians and 265,000 European Union citizens participated in 1,504 polling stations.

The right-wing Freedom Party (FPÖ) also achieved stronger-than-expected results, winning 20% ​​of the vote, a 16 percentage point increase over the previous election.
