Young director Ha Le Diem with the documentary film "Children in the Mist" has just been awarded the "Best Director" award at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival 2021 (taken place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from the day November 17 to 28).

The organizers of the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival 2021 announced the list of winners in this year's categories, in which director Ha Le Diem won the "Best Director" award in the "International Competition" category. " (International Competition) with the film "Children of the Mist". This is the second most important award, only after the "Best Film" award which belongs to the 4-hour long film "Mr. Landsbergis” (Lithuania and Dutch co-production) directed by Sergei Loznitsa (Ukrainian).

"Children in the Mist" (92 minutes) is one of 14 works competing for this category. The film tells about the life of Di, a 12-year-old H'Mong girl living in Sa Pa town (Lao Cai province). From the character Di and the relationships around her, the female director tells a story about the frictions and conflicts between ancient customs and modern values, the challenges faced by ethnic minority and special children. especially girls have to face as they reach adulthood. The character Di wants to go to school, but she was born in a place where there is a custom of "catching a wife", which hinders her dream of continuing to go to school. The film reflects the unfortunate consequences of this practice, including the risk of kidnapping and human trafficking.

Director Ha Le Diem (born in 1991, Tay ethnic group, born in Bac Kan) graduated from the Faculty of Journalism, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and was a student at the Center for Support and Development of Cinematic Talents. Vietnam (TPD), a student in the documentary film course of Varan Vietnam 2016.

In addition to the award for Ha Le Diem personally, the film "Children in the mist" also won a special prize of the jury for the category "First film".

The Amsterdam International Documentary Festival (IDFA) has been held annually since 1988 and has grown into the largest documentary festival in existence today, attracting documentary filmmakers from all over the world.
